How to Apply Liquid Fertiliser
Follow these steps to get the best result from a liquid fertiliser application on your lawn.
- Choose the right time of day Always apply in the cool of the morning or late afternoon. This reduces evaporation and lowers the risk of leaf scorch, especially during our warm Northern NSW summers.
- Adjust your rate for colour If your lawn is looking a little pale and you want a deeper green, apply at the higher end of the recommended rate. For a routine top-up, the standard rate is plenty.
- Apply evenly across the lawn Use a knapsack sprayer or watering can for good coverage. A clean, rinsed-out hose-on bottle also works well and makes the job easy on larger areas.
- Water in lightly straight after A light rinse with the hose after application helps move the nutrients down to the root zone and reduces the chance of any leaf burn.
- Rinse any hard surfaces immediately Liquid fertilisers containing iron will stain paths, driveways and pavers if left to dry. Wash off any overspray straight away while it is still wet.
- Apply monthly during active growth During the warmer months when your lawn is actively growing, a monthly application maintains even colour and growth. Apply any time you spot signs of nutrient deficiency too.
- Back it up with a granular fertiliser Liquid fertiliser gives a near-instant boost, but for long-term lawn health we recommend applying a quality granular fertiliser around 3 to 4 times a year. The two work together, short-term colour and vigour from liquid, and sustained root and leaf health from granular.
Why a Liquid and Granular Combination Works Best
Liquid fertilisers deliver available nitrogen and soluble phosphorus quickly through the leaf, which is why you often see a colour response within days. The iron and manganese in a good liquid fertiliser also deepen that rich green colour our local kikuyu, buffalo, couch and zoysia lawns are capable of. It is the ideal tool when your lawn needs a fast lift, whether that is after a dry spell, heavy traffic or just a mid-season refresh.
That said, liquid fertiliser on its own is not a complete program. Granular products release nutrients more slowly and steadily, supporting root development and overall lawn structure over weeks and months. Applying granular fertiliser 3 to 4 times a year alongside your monthly liquid applications gives your lawn a full nutritional foundation rather than just short bursts of green.
The good news is that liquid fertiliser suits all warm-season varieties we grow here at the farm, including kikuyu, couch, buffalo and zoysia. It is safe to use on new lawns from laying day and on established turf at any point in the year, so there is always a good reason to keep a bottle on hand.
