How to measure your area

Rectangle area calculator

For a rectangle, multiply the length x width.

Example: length 10m; width 23m
10m x 23m = 230m²

Oval area calculator

For an oval, multiply the length x 0.80, then by width.

Example: length 26m; width 14m
26m x 0.80 x 14m = 291.2m²

Circle area calculator

To calculate the turf required for a circle, multiply diameter x 0.80, then by diameter again.

Example: diameter 14.5m
14.5m x 0.80 = 11.6, 11.6 x 14.5m = 168.2m²

Triangle area calculator

For a triangle, multiply the length x width and divide by two.

Example: length 10m; width 23m
10m x 23m = 230, divided by 2 = 115m²

Complex shape area calculator

For a complex area, first divide the total area into simple shapes, calculate each one, then add them together.

Example: rectangle 10m x 23m, plus a triangle base 10m, height 8m
10m x 23m = 230m², plus (10m x 8m) divided by 2 = 40m², total: 270m²

How to measure your lawn for turf

Before you measure

A few basics make the difference between an accurate order and a lawn with gaps or leftover turf.

  • Break your yard into shapes Split the area into rectangles, triangles and circles you can measure separately.
  • Measure each shape Length x width for rectangles, base x height / 2 for triangles, pi x radius squared for circles.
  • Subtract what won't be turfed Take off garden beds, paving, pools, decking and tree bases from your total, you only want the area that's actually being turfed.
  • Measure at ground level Measure along the ground rather than across a slope or incline, a tape stretched over a slope will undercount the actual surface area.
  • Add 5 to 10 percent Covers trimming, curves and any cutting mistakes on the day.
  • Note your access Let us know if there's a tight side gate, stairs, or anywhere a wheelbarrow or trolley can't easily reach, it helps us plan the delivery and any hand-carting.

Why choose Tyagarah Turf

Still not sure? Send us a rough sketch with dimensions through the quote form and we will confirm the square meterage for you before you order.

Ordering short means a delivery gap while more turf is cut and freighted up, ordering by a lot too much means paying for and disposing of offcuts. Getting the measurement right the first time avoids both.

For odd-shaped or multi-section yards, the online measuring tool above will do the maths for you, just draw around the area and it works out the total automatically.
