Preparing your site for new turf
Getting the ground ready
Four jobs in the week before delivery set your lawn up to root in fast.
- Clear the area Remove old grass, weeds and debris down to bare soil.
- Level and cultivate Turn over the top 75 to 100mm of soil and level it, filling any low spots.
- Add starter fertiliser Work a turf starter fertiliser into the top layer before laying.
- Water the soil Lightly water the prepared soil the day before your turf arrives.
Why preparation matters
Turf roots chase moisture and loose soil. On compacted or weedy ground the roots sit near the surface, the joins stay visible for longer and the lawn needs more water to hold its colour.
You don't need machinery for a typical yard. A mattock or rotary hoe for the cultivating, a rake for the levelling and an afternoon of work covers most home lawns.
If your soil is heavy clay or pure sand, give us a call before you order. A 50 to 75mm layer of quality underturf soil spread over the top is the quickest fix, and we can point you to a local supplier.
